Total credit in Japan is the sum total of all outstanding bank loan assets. Growing credit signals inflation, while declining credit signals deflation. The left chart shows the total loan level (total credit outstanding), while the right chart shows the change y/y in credit. The annual change in credit should approximate the monetary inflation rate over time.
